Nam June Paik & The residents

His tv installations are my favorite. They look like they took up so much of his time and that they have great meaning to him. I do not get the point of the girl with the tvs on her chello. I guess this image also ties into the girl with the Tv bra. After Tokyo he spends most of his time in New York. I think it would have been amazing to be living in New York when all these artists and muscians were there. Everyone wanted to be in New York to get famous.

When i saw The residents, my first reaction was to laugh. They are a very strange group. I am looking at some of their performances on YouTube. One of them is called burning love and they are just dancing around with cowboy hats on and masks and their eyes are just like lights shining through their masks. All they are doing is silly dance moves, that me and my friends could do. They do this through out the entire video. The Residents also have media titled, Everyone comes to the Freak show. I feel liek they just want to be extreme and try to do performances that will make people talk.

Head to toe body paint

Performance art

I LOVED this project. At first i was confused and was not sure what i was going to, then i thought i love making an ass out of myself. I am not shy and i always act sillt in public, because i do not care what other people think about me. I thought it would be fun to paint my body and act like a statue, i thought doing it in the mall. Then the problem was how to get to the mall with all the paint on, i did not want to make a mess out of my car. So i decided on bayshore at around 6pm. There are always a ton of people out there and people who will be conservative and working out and this would be a great stop to do my performance art. My friend Jenna helped me with the project, she is the other red person. When i told her my idea, she told me that she HAD to be part of it. At first we were just standing as statues, then sitting on the wall. Then we tried laying in the grass, but the best one we made was when we were just dancing and interacting with one another. It was great when children walked by " Daddy why are there red people?" It was so hard not to laugh at this. This is something i would enjoy doing in my free time :-)

Music is Life

I loved class on Wednesday, because it was all about music. When i was younger i grew up around all differnt forms of music. My father was in a band and they would practice in my house. My dad plays the drums and still does to this day. My parents would always have parties and i would be trying to sleep and i would hear the music playing while they were laughing and dancing. Music reminds me of my childhood and good times. U2, Phil Collins, Bob Marley, Allman Brothers, and The dead were just a few artists that my parents loved. I was actually named after a song called Sweet Melissa, by the Allman Brothers.

I feel like music is there for me in every situation. There is always a song out there that can understand how you are feeling.

About half the songs that were played during class, i have heard of before. The Peaches song i have definitely heard before. I also like Techno music, so i enjoyed when all that was playing. When ever i go on road trips i put in a Techno cd and the drive goes right by. The Chemical brothers were funny with the salmon dance.

"Look but don't touch"

This post is in relation to the article by Claudia la Rocco, titles Some at MoMA show forget "look but don't touch"

When every i go to an art gallery, i know not to touch anything unless otherwise stated. When i went to the Tampa Museum of Art, they wanted to make sure that I did not have any writing utensils on me. I told them no, but i did. i was not going to do anything with them. The guards were watching us and i could feel their eyes on me.

In this article people get too close with the performer. If you are an art person, then you know the rules about not touching, this person might of done this just to get the reaction of the performer and the guards. Especially if the performance artist it naked, you should have enough common sense to not touch them....it is just plain stupidity.

I honestly think the reason this person did this, is to see the reaction and to be able to say he did it. He now has a story that he can talk about. That he touched a naked mans ass, with out his consent, and it was at a museum. One thing i do not understand is that the man had a 30 yr membership with the museum. That got taken from him once he got thrown out. Maybe he had been a member for a long time, and was sick of the museum. Maybe he thought it was worth loosing his membership over.

Opera en el Mercado

I thought this YouTube video was extremely interesting. In the beginning of the video, i did not know who was signing. Then then camera shows you that it is a man at the market, behind a fruit station. People in the market who are shopping start to stop and watch the man singing. All of the opera singing had amazing voices, with so much power to them. People started to stop and watch, they were entertained and amused by the singers passion. The market people were also taking pictures and getting involved with the performance. The main singer comes into the middle of the floor and a circle starts to form around him. He then pulls people in from the audience and makes them part of his performance. Most of the people looked like they were enjoying the music and the entertainment. They were singing along and dancing, at the end one woman looked as if she was crying. I just hope i have the same luck with my performance art this week...........

S T E L A R C

My first opinions of Stelarc was that he was crazy. After researching him on my own and reading up on his reasoning behind what he does, i am not intrigued. Humans and machine are similar and he expresses just how much alike they are. This reminds me of Terminator because he is a machine, but you can not tell right away. I do think some of the things that Stelarc does, are dangerous. I am sure he knows what he is doig by now and understands the consequences if something does go wrong. On his website there is a theory about "The Hum of the Hybrid". He talks about no reason for death and having a baby outside of the womb. All of this is very interesting. He also says not to be scared that you will look like frankenstein. I think he has very creative ides, the ear is awesome!!!! Kind of creepy, but still cool.

Fluxus & Joseph Beuys

Fluxus.
1960's

This was a group of creatives. They were all different types of people that would network with one another and with art. They were designers and artists and musicians. New York City held the first Fluxus event. NYC is known to have all the new ideas and art shows take place there, so that was no surprise to me. I think this time period was all about expression and trying to see what you could get away with. Marcel Duchamp's work reminds me of Picasso's work. They both change the human body into different shapes and angles. They make you look at something ordinary in a dissimilar way. Duchamp's art work is very interesting. His fountain piece i am still trying to understand. I guess that is the point of this class....to see everyday things as art. I remember a quote that i think Santiago said "Anything is art, all you have to do is frame it." I think this quote helps me understand art. This quote also makes me realize that my view and someone's view of art can be completely different. And that is also what makes art so interesting and controversial.

Joseph Beuys
He was a man who had great strength. It was crazy when i was reading that Beuys actually served under Hitler. I could not imagine being covered with someones body fat. That is what happened to Beuys after a plane crash, while he was in war. His work aspirations come from the war and his involvement. He covered things in his art work alot, for example the piano and another one with a long blanket with a hanger coming out of it. I found his piece with the chair and (what is supposed to represent fat) sitting on the chair.

Aerial View

Xerox

I enjoyed the idea of the Xerox project, but it was difficult to execute. I went to Kinkos with Maggie and we were copying parts of our bodies, and got yelled at by employees. After the lady yelled at us, I felt kind of strange putting my foot on top of the copier. I then proceeded to put my face in there and that made even more people look. I think if i had my own Xerox machine or it was in a more private place, then i could of gotten better pictures. Also i liked how other students only used their hands, but made there hands make different signs.

ORLAN

I think this lady is insane! This is my first time being exposed to performance art, that is this extreme. I do not understand why someone would want to implant horns in their face, and look like this. I think people like this just want attention, and i do not understand how getting liposuction is an art. In a way i feel like i can not judge what she does because this is my first time learning about her, but what she does is out of this world.....I do think she is brave and creative to film these surgeries and be away during them. It is something that is very different. The one thing that bothered me was when Orlan pulled out used tampons......and was laying them out and doing something with them... i dont even remember what she did with them because i could not even look. That was DISGUSTING! That i NOT art, im sorry if i offend anyone but that was just nasty. EWW
